Diet Strategies against Asthma

A healthy lifestyle at a young age is essential to having a long life. Especially for people with diseases such as asthma, maintaining a healthy diet plan is vital.

There are certain food allergens that can trigger an asthma attacks. Some of these include dairy products such as cow’s milk, cereals, eggs, soy, bread, blue cheese, cider, wine, nuts, and fish. Although people who experience food-triggered asthma is relatively small in number, it is still best to be aware of any food allergies you have to prevent causing an attack.

Despite certain foods being the cause of an asthma attack, there are also other types of food that can help control the severity of asthma. A perfect example is coffee. Caffeine, being the main substance found in coffee, is said to be chemically related to theophylline which is used to treat asthma.

Another food for asthma group is known to help stimulate the nerves, dilating air passageways which make it more open for breathing. This food group is composed of the spicy ones such as chilli, hot mustard, garlic and onions.

To help control the inflammation of airways, onions, fish oil and vitamin C-packed foods are a perfect example. These foods contain anti-inflammatory ingredients which are essential for people have swollen, inflamed and sensitive airways.

There are already several asthma diet strategies that one can follow. Asthma patients should eat plenty of foods rich in Vitamin B and magnesium. These include green leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, dried figs, potatoes, bananas, lentils, tuna, cocoa, tea, and so on.

Dairy products are the usual culprits when it comes to food allergies so avoid eating them. Instead of these dairy products, opt for wholemeal bread, pasta, brown rice and non-dairy organic rice milk. Take note of foods and drinks with sulphur content such as dried fruits, wines and salads. Check the label to find out if such ingredient is present. Reduce your intake of salty foods, soft drinks, sugar and even seafood.

Essential vitamins and minerals also play a vital role in people who have asthma. Make sure you are getting enough Vitamin A, Vitamin B-6, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Zinc, Selenium, and essential fatty acids (omega-3 oils). Examples of these vitamin rich foods include carrots, squashes, beans, fish, whole grains, melons, peaches, corn, olives, spinach, raisins, oatmeal, brown rice, almonds, walnuts and the like.
